So you’re engaged (sweeeeet, congrats!!!) and you may have heard or read that lots of couples get engagement photos. And you’re probably imagining really stiff, awkward poses with plastic smiles that don’t at all feel like you, kind of like prom photos. You may be thinking “no way, what a waste of money and time and dignity!” Well, I can definitely understand that. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Engagement photos can actually offer you a lot, so I wanted to take a few minutes to give you 3 reasons to consider having engagement photos taken.
1. Describe your relationship
With a good photographer, your engagement photos may better describe your relationship than even your wedding photos! Why? Because you don’t have that time pressure bearing down on you, you can wear whatever you want, and you can bring things of significance, and you’ll have plenty of time and room to just goof off. You can also choose a location(s) that has meaning for you, perhaps where you had your first date!
2. It might be free anyway
A lot of wedding photographers are now including an engagement session in their wedding packages, or just offering it for free – just be sure you understand what you’re getting and what you’re not getting. For example, the session may not come with a disc, but could include versions for Facebook.
3. Make your wedding photos better
This is a big one, and it mainly applies to when you have your engagement photos taken by the photographer that does your wedding as well. An engagement session is in some ways a trial run. It’s a chance for the photographer to get to know the couple in terms of what makes them laugh, what they like to do in front of the camera, what they’re uncomfortable with, and what angles look best on them. It also allows the couple to get familiar with the photographer’s shooting style so that by the time the wedding rolls around, they know what their photographer is going to ask of them and what it feels like to take great photos. So do it, do it for your wedding photos!
The photographer can get a stellar shot of your engagement ring in a way your camera phone could never even dream of. Woot!
